New Security Features in SQL Server 2016

Mary Groth, DBA Progressive

Microsoft is taking securing data seriously with SQL Server 2016. There are three new features available in SQL Server 2016: dynamic data masking, row-level security (security predicate), and ‘Always Encrypted’. The first two options have been implemented by database developers and DBAs using database roles and stored procedures for years; but now it is there in the engine and virtually effortless to implement. Always Encrypted provides end to end data encryption; the data is encrypted at the client using ADO.net.

About Mary:
Mary Groth, Database Administrator, Progressive Insurance Inc. I have been working with SQL Server, as a developer and DBA since Version 4.2. Through my career I have been fortunate to be able to work with Microsoft as they were implementing new features and versions of SQL Server. I have worked on partitioning of VLDBs, PDW, In-Memory OLTP, Polybase (PDW & SQL 2016), and Always Encrypted.
